Summary
This book, written origianlly in danish by Kamma Stenholt Andersson and subsequently translated into English, is an autobiographical account of a young Danish girl's growing up during the years 1936-46. It describes the life of her working class family struggling economicalluy during the Great Depression under the yoke of Nazi oppression. Most poignantly, she describes her close friendship with a Jewish neighbor, Klara Ruben, and her own family's response to what befell the Ruben famly. It is an inspiring example on a small scale of how the entire Danish nation effectively came to the aid of its Jewish citizens and saved the great majority of them, the only nation to do so.
