The ocean at the end of the lane

It began forty years ago, shortly after our narrator turned seven, when their lodger stole the family car and committed suicide in it, stirring up ancient powers best left undisturbed. Dark creatures from beyond the world were let loose, and it took everything our narrator had just to stay alive. His only defense was three women, on a farm at the end of the lane. The youngest of them claimed that her duckpond was the ocean; the oldest could remember the Big Bang.
