At a university in China, Lin and Liz become friends. Lin is a shy student and Liz a Chinese American teacher. Both are met by hostility from their peers. After Lin's expulsion, she attends a college in Ohio, while Liz stays to investigate why her parents left China. Both far from home during a global pandemic, they find that fierce differences may bring us even closer.
