At fourteen, Alexandra Bouvier's comfortable life in Paris is upended by World War I. By the time she attends the University of Chicago at eighteen, she has suffered unimaginable losses. There she meets Oliver Foster, a newspaper reporter. He too has known loss, and they are drawn to each other, though both fear attachment. As it turns out, Alex has good reason for caution.
